Graviola – Weapon against cancer
“Active ingredients: Graviola”
Graviola is a tropical tree that usually reaches 5-6 m of height. It thrives in warm tropical regions of South America. The fruit is heart-shaped, its flesh is white and of yellow-green color. Every single part of the tree such as the leaves, the fruit, the seeds, the tree bark and roots are used as natural medicines.
Graviola has a long history of usage in herbal medicine –by the indigenous of Amazon- It is used for : diabetes, catarrh, spasms, as antimicrobial against broad spectrum of bacteria and fungi, against pests, regulation of high blood pressure, depression, nervous disorders, heart disease, asthma, liver problems, arthritis, etc. Its main active substances are called Annonaceous acetogenins and their systematic study has started since 90s.
The results of different research groups, from experiments in vitro and in animals, have shown that these substances have significant properties on eliminating tumors and specific toxicity against tumor cells of different types without affecting healthy cells , including colon, breast, prostate, lung and pancreas. Especially in in vitro experiments in tumor cells of the colon, Graviola showed multiplied times higher capacity on shrinking the tumor than Adriamycin, a substance that is given on chemotherapy, without showing any toxicity. The study of the action model has shown that they are excellent inhibitors of enzymatic processes involved in the membrane of tumor cells and they also act selectively on cancer cells with multidrug immunity due to binding of ATP – the main source of energy in the cell.
A multibillion-dollar pharmaceutical company in the United States, looking for a cure for cancer, has focused on the Graviola tree. He tried for almost seven years to synthesize two of the most powerful substances in order to obtain patents. The company spent money on research and testing of Graviola’s anti-cancer properties and was shocked by the results. But the pharmaceutical company had a big problem. Years had passed trying to isolate and create artificial copies of two of the tree’s most powerful chemicals, but they could not reproduce the original. And they could not sell the product at a high profit because by law natural substances cannot be registered with a patent. After seven years, the company froze the plan. Since 1976, there have been several promising studies on cancer in relation to Graviola. Graviola has been shown to kill in vitro cancer cells in at least 20 laboratory tests.
A recent study conducted at the Universal University of South Korea found that these two chemicals showed “selective cytotoxicity comparable to adriamycin” for breast and colon cancer cells. Another study, published in the Journal of Natural Products, showed that Graviola selectively kills colon cancer cells with a potential 10,000 times the activity of adriamycin. Other promising and ongoing research at Purdue University is supported by a grant from the National Cancer Institute. Perhaps the most important result of the study cited above by the Universal University of South Korea is that Graviola selectively targets cancer cells leaving all healthy ones untouched. Graviola seems to be a promising alternative or complementary therapy.
